Such a stern Tower of London
From the Mighty Fortress, the Royal Palace to the infamous prison ...
Every tourist who bought a ticket to London, certainly has a desire to go on an excursion to the Tower of London. Why does it attract tourists so much? Perhaps the answer to this question lies in the harsh appearance and history of the Tower. Indeed, even today, centuries later, the Tower fascinates and horrifies at the same time.
Legend has it that the fortress was founded by William I the Conqueror back in 1078. Initially, it was a mighty stone tower. Later, Henry III and Edward I expanded it by building defensive walls. At different times, kings and queens used the Tower to protect themselves and their property. To this day, the Crown Jewels are here protected by a garrison of soldiers.
The Tower of London is also known for its royal death stories. Here were executed and killed: Henry VI, children of Edward IV, Anna Boleyn, Katherine Howard, Jane Gray.
- Palace Guard or Beefeaters
Famous guards are symbols of the Tower around the world. The first Beefeaters were the personal guards of Henry VII. They were named so because they were allowed to eat as much beef as they wanted from the king’s table.
The Tower of London is still one of the world's leading tourist attractions and a World Heritage Site. It is still home to the Beefeaters and their families, the resident governor and the garrison of soldiers. There is even a doctor and chaplain!
Having visited the Tower, you will plunge into the historical atmosphere and for a long time you will be impressed by what you saw and heard during the tour.
