It has a tropical climate and a population of about 280,000 people. Barbados was discovered by Europeans in 1536, but it wasn't colonized until 1625 by English settlers who were fleeing religious persecution on other islands (such as Bermuda). The name "Barbados" comes from an Arawak word meaning "land of hills."
