Liberia is the capital of the province of Guanacaste, Costa Rica. It was originally founded by American expatriates in 1853 as "Liberia" and named after President James Monroe's home state of Virginia. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1882 but rebuilt soon after. In 1970 it became an important center for tourism when Juan Santamaria International Airport opened nearby.

Liberia has attracted many foreign investors due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean beaches and easy access from San Jose via highways that lead directly into town - Route 1 (Costa Rica Highway) or Route 21 (Nicaragua Highway).
