Tolantongo, a place where it feels warm

Tolantongo is a small town in Mexico. It's located in the state of Hidalgo, near the source of the Catemaco River and 198 km or three-to-four hours north of Mexico City.  You can get the town by a rented car from Mexico City. It has an elevation of 2,100 meters above sea level. The town is surrounded by green mountains and it has a special charm that makes you feel at home. There are many things to do here so let's take a look at them:

Tolantongo is an indigenous town with a special charm, with its typical houses built in volcanic stone and its ancestral wisdom. It is located in the municipality of San Juan del Río, Hidalgo, Mexico. It has been declared as "National Historic Monument" by the Mexican government because it has great cultural value due to its history as an ancient settlement that dates back more than 2 thousand years ago.

Learn about the culture of the Mayan people and enjoy their food

Tolantongo is a place where you can learn about the culture of the Mayan people and at the same time know how to enjoy their food. The food here is delicious, there are many restaurants where you can try traditional dishes like tamales or mole poblano. Also, there are some good hotels if you want to stay overnight in this town. As far as safety goes, Tolantongo has a very low crime rate so it's an excellent choice for tourists who are looking for peace and quiet during their vacation time!

This town offers a wide range of activities

Tolantongo offers a wide range of activities, including mountain biking, rappelling and climbing. You can also take part in canoeing or go on a picnic with your family or friends. The town has many beautiful places to visit such as:

  • Tolantongo Lake (Laguna de Tolantongo) - This lake is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers great views of its surroundings. It's an excellent place for bird watching because it has many types of birds that live there year-round like egrets and storks; however, during winter months you can spot migratory species such as ducks or geese which pass through this area on their way south from Canada to South America.
  • Cascada del Salto (Cascade Falls Horse Jump) - This waterfall is located 10 km away from Tolantongo town center; it's easy to reach since there's already road access available along this route but if you want more adventure then try walking through trails instead! The hike takes approximately 30 minutes one way so bring plenty water along with sunscreen since temperatures tend reach high levels during summer months (June - August).
  • You can also go canoeing on Lake Catemaco, have a picnic in the park or take day trips from here to different Mayan villages like El Triunfo, Hueyapan and Veracruz.
  • If you want to take day trips from Tolantongo, there are many Mayan villages nearby such as El Triunfo, Hueyapan and Veracruz.

Tolantongo is a great place to visit if you're looking for an adventure. There are many things you can do in Tolantongo, including:

  • Visiting the Chichen Itza pyramid. This is one of Mexico's most famous sites and it's definitely worth seeing!
  • Hiking or visiting nearby cenotes (natural pools). These natural wonders are some of Mexico's best kept secrets!
  • Visiting the museum at El Pueblo de los Altos de Chiapa de Corzo, which has exhibits on local culture and history as well as information about how coffee was first grown here in Chiapas state. If you want an authentic experience with locals while enjoying delicious food, then La Bodeguita del Medio is just what you need--they serve up traditional dishes using ingredients grown right here in Tolantongo!

Resort

The resort has a swimming pool, a restaurant, a bar and spa. The facilities are top notch and include indoor/outdoor pools, sauna and steam rooms. There is also an onsite gym with trainers available to help you get fit while staying at the resort!

Ecological zone

Tolantongo is located in the ecological zone of the Sierra Madre Oriental, a mountain range that runs through five states in Mexico. The area has many animal species, such as pumas, deer and wild boar. It's also a great place for bird watching: you can see quetzals here!

Tolantongo is home to many plant species like cactus plants or pine trees with long needles. The insects living here include butterflies which have beautiful colors like blue or red ones! There are also different kinds of fish swimming around in its streams such as trout (a kind of fish) or catfish (another kind).

The grottos

The grottos are located in the nearby town of San Miguel, which is only a short drive from Tolantongo. There are several grottos to visit and each has its own unique features. Some are more difficult to access than others, but all are worth checking out if you're looking for something different than what's offered at most other attractions in Mexico. If you don't want to hike through the jungle yourself, there's also an option to go rappelling or canoeing on Lake Catemaco (which is right next door).

Man-made semi-circular “chapoteaderos”

In Tolantongo, there are many man-made semi-circular "chapoteaderos," or mud baths. The word chapoteaderos means "mud baths" and refers to a natural phenomenon of the town: when it rains, water flows down from the mountains into two pools where people can go to relax and soak up some therapeutic minerals like magnesium chloride. The pools are located in central park of Tolantongo so that anyone can go there and relax in them!

The setting is peaceful and quiet

If you're looking for a place where it feels warm, Tolantongo is definitely the right choice. The town is not busy and noisy, but quiet and peaceful instead. There are no crowds of people walking around and polluting the air with their cars or trucks either; it's clean air here! In fact, there are hardly any cars at all in this small village so if you want to get away from traffic jams and pollution then come here!

The town has a small but nice museum where you can learn about the community's history

It's open from 10am to 5pm and is free to visit. There are only a few artifacts and photos on display, but they're worth checking out if you want to learn more about Tolantongo, which dates back at least 1,000 years, before heading out into the surrounding area.
