Holidays on the island of Corfu

In the northwest of the Ionian Sea there is a picturesque island called Kerkyra, better known as tourist Corfu. Unlike other resort areas and islands of Greece, Corfu impresses with its unusually comfortable, mild climate, and the golden period of such a climate falls from about the beginning of June to mid-August.

Corfu is not only velvet sand, shimmering with gold, and the azure sea. This place dates back to ancient times, so most of the buildings here have retained a touch of antiquity. Among the main attractions of this place should be noted the Museum of Ancient Asian Culture and Rare Byzantine Paintings, the Museum of I. Kapodistrias, where there are personal items of the first president of Greece, who was born in this wonderful region.

At first glance, an inconspicuous village called Gastouri and located on the hill “Achilia” (that was the name of the Greek hero of myths) can be proud of its summer residence of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth, popularly known as Sisi. There is also a palace, which has not completely lost the richness of its decorations. It welcomes tourists in the form of a museum.

For visitors, it will not be difficult to communicate with the local population, because all of them, except for Greek, have a good command of English. If you know English at a basic level, then, of course, it would be better to improve your skills. Even before the trip, you need to learn the language at a conversational level, and read the reviews of those who have already been to the island: after all, while studying English, the reviews of those who have already gone on vacation to Corfu will be very useful to you. And in general, a good knowledge of the language will allow you to turn any trip into even more exciting and interesting.

Since ancient times, the symbol of the island of Corfu is the tiny island of Pontikonisi, on which the monastery of Pantokrator is located. According to the legend that the indigenous people love to tell, this island is nothing more than the mythical ship of Odysseus, which Poseidon, the god of the seas, wished to turn into a rock. And nearby are the still preserved ruins of the temple of the goddess Artemis, which was erected here back in 590 BC. e.

Any traveler will like the island of Corfu: young people will find here an impossible number of a wide variety of nightclubs and round-the-clock yacht discos, outdoor enthusiasts will be able to go in for diving, surfing, and horseback riding, which is a special sight along the picturesque slopes and valleys of the island. Gourmets will be able to taste a one-of-a-kind liquor called “Kumkuat” and take part in the process of making olive oil - in short, an adventure for every taste.
