Most popular cities of Greece

Greece is one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations. The country has a rich and diverse history, which is reflected in its many attractions and museums. It's also known for having some of the world's best beaches and not-to-be-missed ancient ruins. But where should you go if you want to see these attractions? Here are some of the most popular cities in Greece:

Athens

Athens is the capital of Greece and also its largest city, with a metropolitan area of over 3 million inhabitants. A central part of the Balkans, Athens forms a large conurbation with its suburbs, making it the largest urban area in Greece. The city has been known as "the Greek capital" since around 1890, when it was expanded by King George I to be larger than any other city on earth at that time (with exception to Constantinople). It was named after Athena (Minerva), who was said to have sprung fully grown from Zeus' head - although there are several different versions of this story floating around!

Athens has always been an important trading post for goods coming into Europe via sea routes through Asia Minor; today it accounts for almost half of all tourism revenues in Greece.

Chios

Chios is an island in the Aegean Sea, situated between Turkey and Greece. It's known for its wine and cheese, as well as its rich history. The city of Chios has been inhabited since ancient times; it was settled by Greek colonists from Euboea in the 8th century BC. Today, it's one of Greece's most popular tourist destinations--and with good reason: there are beautiful beaches here!

Corfu Town

Corfu Town is the capital of the island of Corfu and has a population of 33,000 people. The city is a popular tourist destination due to its Venetian architecture, history and natural beauty.

Corfu Town was founded by Corinthians who came to live there after they were expelled from their home city by the Spartans in 657 BC. It soon became an important center for trade and culture on the Greek mainland as well as being an independent republic during Roman rule (168 BC - 27 AD).

Heraklion

Heraklion, or Heraclion as it was known in ancient times, is the largest city and administrative capital of Crete. It has several museums and archaeological sites, including Knossos Palace which is one of the most important Minoan palaces on Crete. The city also has an Orthodox cathedral; a mosque; a synagogue; two Protestant churches and three Catholic churches.

Kalamata

Kalamata is a city in southern Greece, located on the Lelas Gulf and at the foot of Mount Taygetus. It is part of Messenia and is known as "the city of olives" due to its large production of olive oil.

The city was founded by Dorians led by Sparta who arrived there around 1000 BC or earlier; they built a temple dedicated to Artemis (Doric form: Artemisia) which became an important religious center for ancient Greece. Kalamata was first mentioned in written sources during Byzantine times as Kallithea (Greek: Kαλλιτηα). The name may have been derived from an ancient Minoan town called Kydonia or perhaps from the word kalathos meaning basket used by local farmers because it was surrounded by extensive olive groves which produced excellent fruit baskets called 'kalamatina'. The municipality has an area of 232 km2 (89 sq mi), while its population reached 50,823 inhabitants according to 2011 census data.

Nafplio

Nafplio is a town and municipality in the Peloponnese, Greece. The town is located on the Argolid Peninsula, on the eastern side of the Argolic Gulf. Nafplio is today the capital of Argolis Prefecture, one of Greece's 13 regions.

The modern city traces its roots to an ancient Greek colony established in 471 BC during ancient times by Spartans who had fled there from Sparta after an uprising against their peers had failed (the so-called "Dorian Invasion"). Nafplio was named after Naufeles, a local hero who died during this unsuccessful rebellion against tyranny at home.

Nemea

Nemea is a city in Greece, located in the Peloponnese region. It is famous for its wines and olives, which are produced on the surrounding plains. Nemea has been inhabited since ancient times; archaeological evidence points to habitation starting as early as the 6th millennium BC. During this time period it was likely an agricultural settlement rather than a city-state like Athens or Sparta were at that time; however, it did play an important role in Greek mythology by being home to one of Hercules' 12 labors (killing off some vicious man-eating lions).

In modern times Nemea has become popular with tourists due to its proximity to both Corinth and Argos; these two cities have served as centers of trade since antiquity so many people pass through them while traveling between other parts of Greece or Europe/Asia Minor.

Rethymno

Rethymno is a city in Crete, Greece. It's the capital of Rethymno regional unit and it's also known as Vourkari ("green harbor"). The population of Rethymno is approximately 40,000 people.

The most popular cities of Greece

Its main town is Vessa where you can find many hotels and restaurants along its harbor with beautiful views over Chios Bay or towards Asia Minor mainland coastlines at night time when everything's lit up!
